Is Your Heating Struggling to Keep Up? Try This 5-Minute Check

Your boiler has been working flat out for months. Just like your car after a long motorway journey, it might be starting to show a few signs of wear and tear.

If you’ve noticed your Gloucestershire home isn’t getting quite as toasty as it should be, or your energy bills seem to be climbing without explanation, don’t assume you need a costly new boiler. More often than not, your system just needs a quick tune-up.

Here are three simple checks you can do right now to get your heating back to full strength.

1. The “Cold Spot” Test (Time to Bleed Your Radiators)

Run your hand carefully along the face of your radiators, from top to bottom. Are they piping hot at the bottom but noticeably cooler at the top? This is a textbook sign of trapped air inside the radiator.

When air gets stuck in your radiators, it takes up valuable space where hot water should be circulating. The result? Your boiler burns through gas heating pockets of air instead of warming your living room. Not exactly efficient.

The Fix:
Bleeding your radiators is surprisingly straightforward. Turn your heating off completely and wait for the radiators to cool down a touch. Then, using a radiator key (you can pick one up from any hardware shop for about a quid), gently open the valve at the top corner of the radiator. You’ll hear a hissing sound as the trapped air escapes. Once you see a trickle of water coming out, close the valve back up. Job done.

Do this for every radiator in your home, and you should notice a real difference in how warm your rooms feel.

2. Check Your Boiler Pressure Gauge

After you’ve bled your radiators, don’t skip this next step. Releasing all that trapped air can cause your system pressure to drop, and if it drops too low, your boiler won’t fire up at all.

The Check:
Head over to your boiler and look at the pressure gauge on the front panel. You’re looking for the needle to sit comfortably in the green zone, usually somewhere between 1.0 and 1.5 bar. If it’s dipped below 1.0, you’ll need to top up the pressure using your boiler’s filling loop.

Not sure how to do that? Your boiler’s manual will have instructions, or give us a ring and we’ll talk you through it over the phone. It only takes a couple of minutes, but it makes all the difference.

3. Listen for “The Clunk” (or the Whistle, or the Bang…)

Turn your heating back on and just listen for a moment. A healthy, happy boiler should hum along quietly in the background. You shouldn’t really notice it’s there.

The Warning Signs:

If you hear banging, whistling, or a sound that plumbers call “kettling” (imagine a kettle that’s about to boil over), that’s your boiler trying to tell you something. These noises usually point to limescale build-up inside the heat exchanger or a failing pump.

Don’t ignore these sounds. They might seem harmless now, but they’re often the first warning sign before a full breakdown. And trust us, you don’t want your boiler packing in during a cold snap.

When to Call in the Professionals

Look, we know not everyone feels comfortable adjusting boiler pressure or fiddling with radiator valves, and that’s absolutely fine. If any of this feels a bit daunting, or if your radiators are still stone cold after bleeding them, it’s time to bring in someone who knows what they’re doing.

It’s always better (and cheaper) to fix a small niggle now than to face an emergency call-out when temperatures really drop.
